As of August 1st, 2013, computer services are no longer exempt from sales taxes in Massachusetts. State lawmakers passed a new sales tax on computer services along with increasing the gasoline and tobacco tax rates.

This means going forward, vendors that provide computer services will need to collect the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax rate on top of their fee. The new sales tax applies to services like computer repairs, network installation and configuration, and web design. This new law didn’t receive as much media attention as the gasoline and tobacco tax increases so it’s likely many vendors are not aware of their new tax responsibilities.
